A John Tortorella training camp requires a lot of intense skating. As a result, it can usually lead to some fatigue by the time the preseason gets underway.

Sunday's preseason opener was a pleasant surprise. Monday's was more of what is expected. The Montreal Canadiens broke the ice in the second period and dominated the third, scoring four more goals in a 5-0 defeat for the Flyers.

The first period featured plenty of special teams work for both sides. The Flyers had two early power plays. The Canadiens had a full two minutes of 5-on-3 time. The period concluded with a four-minute power play for the Flyers.

There was no scoring through 20 minutes. Shots were 9-7 Montreal.

At 8:18 of the second period, the Canadiens opened the scoring. Off a turnover by Ronnie Attard, Luke Tuch finished on the scoring chance alone in front to make it 1-0.

Through two periods, shots were 16-16.

The Canadiens poured it on in the third. They scored three goals in 2:33, starting with David Savard beating Cal Petersen at 3:06. Just 50 seconds later, Emil Heineman added a goal to make it 3-0. Josh Anderson scored at 5:39 to cap the three-goal barrage.

With 2:15 remaining, the Canadiens capped the four-goal period with a goal by Alex Barre-Boulet.

Eetu Makiniemi played the first half of the game and made 13 saves on 14 shots in 31:14. Petersen made eight saves on 12 shots in 28:46. Cayden Primeau made 13 saves and Jakub Dobes made 12 saves in splitting the shutout.

The Flyers have an off day on Tuesday before returning for practice sessions on Wednesday. Their next preseason game is on Thursday night at home against the New York Islanders at 7 p.m.
