Thinking of an amazing summer getaway?

How about one right in our backyard!

The website Islands.com asked travelers to give their favorite small towns to visit in the US for an amazing summer getaway.  Some of the credentials they were looking for include: beauty, history, a dose of whimsy, towns that are packed with character and stunning scenery, and that offer relaxation and adventure.

Which South Jersey Town Made the Summer Getaway List?

I think many of you would guess that Cape May is the town that made the list, and you would be correct!

Why Cape May Continues to Capture Travelers' Hearts

The Cape May County gem seems to always be included on any list of small town destinations, but this one is high praise because it comes from actual travelers, using feedback from Tripadvisor reviews, travel blogs, and lots of destination sites.

Cape May also boasts a rich arts scene, especially thanks to the Cape May Stage and the East Lynne Theater Company, along with many choices in restaurants, wineries, distilleries, and breweries. For a romantic bed and breakfast with an ocean view, Angel of the Sea is one of Cape May's most stunning accommodations,

Some of the other landmarks that Islands.com mentioned about Cape May, which is widely considered to be the oldest seashore resort in the country, include:

  • Victorian-era buildings
  • Historic Cold Spring Village
  • Harriet Tubman Museum
  • The Cape May Lighthouse

Some of the other landmarks that Cape May offers are shopping along Washington Street Mall, dining at Congress Hall, and some of the best beaches, and walking along the boardwalk on the promenade.

Other destinations that made their list were Eureka Springs, Ark., Bar Harbor, ME, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, Highlands, NC, Taos, NM, St. Michaels, MD, Lake Placid, NY, Beaufort, SC, Saugatuck, MI, Telluride, CO, Galena, IL, Bayfield, WI, Leavenworth, WA, Stowe, VT.
