Warmed up for the game by playing football in the backyard with my 6-year-old grandson, Graham. Graham won 35-0 by tying me up with the clothesline en route to the end zone.

Three stars

1. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley (146 rushing yards, 2 TDs in the fourth quarter).

1. Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham (1 sack, 2 tackles for loss).

1. Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu (10 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss).

Eagles’ best play

Barkley broke the game open in the fourth quarter by bursting through a huge hole and racing 39 yards to the end zone.

Eagles’ worst play

Place-kicker Jake Elliott had a terrible game, missing two field goals and an extra point. It marked the first time he missed two field goals since Week 16 of 2020 against the Cowboys.

Turning point

The Eagles defense came up with a huge stand in the fourth quarter.  Trailing 12-10, the Commanders faced a second-and-inches from the Eagles’ 25-yard line, only to be stuffed by defensive tackle Jalen Carter, linebacker Nakobe Dean, linebacker Zack Baun and Graham on three running plays.  Strangely, Commanders coach Dan Quinn decided not to try a go-ahead field goal.

Did you notice?

The Eagles’ sixth straight win improved their record to 8-2 and now have a 1 ½-game lead in the NFC East over the Commanders (7-4).… Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was evaluated for a possible concussion at the end of the first half, but played the entire game.… Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin had just one reception for 10 yards.… Former Eagles tight end Zach Ertz had six catches for 47 yards and a TD and also scored a two-point conversion.… Eagles caught a major break in the fourth quarter when tight end Grant Calcaterra recovered a fumble by tight end Dallas Goedert.… Eagles safety Reed Blankenship recorded the only turnover with an interception.… Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was 22-for-32 for 191 yards with a TD and an interception.
