As football fans prepare for what is set to be an electric Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is bidding to win a record sixth ring at his ninth attempt – almost two decades on from his first Super Bowl appearance.

However, resortscasino.com, the newly-launched online sportsbook based in New Jersey, has taken a look at the 41-year-old’s numbers on the NFL’s biggest stage and spotted a statistical chink in the supposed armor of this dominant player.

Big Game Brady

Having worked his magic in the NFL for 18 years, Brady has seen the game develop over time, and last year’s Super Bowl marked his personal best for completed throwing yards in the big game, with 505. That figure accounts for almost a fifth of his total yards, which stands at an incredible 2,576 yards, with the five-time Vince Lombardi trophy winner averaging 322 per Super Bowl.

Statistically-speaking, though, it seems the Patriots are much more likely to win if Tom Brady isn’t asked to throw all day, posing the question: does Brady carry the team, or does the team’s system carry Brady?

In the three Super Bowls that Brady has lost, he has thrown for an average of 349 yards, almost 45 yards more than his winning Super Bowl average of 305.8. He also has a lower completion rate, with just 61.5% in defeat, compared to 67.8% in victory.

In last year’s Super Bowl, Brady was asked to maintain pace with a high-powered offense, and posted a personal worst in Super Bowl completion percentage (a mere 58.3%), despite throwing plenty of times for a lot of yardage. He eventually ended up with 505 yards and a painful loss.

During the Brady-Belichick era, the Pats have been notoriously difficult to beat, as their dazzling record shows, with nine Super Bowl appearances speaking for themselves.

As for Brady, in his 18 years as QB of the New England Patriots, he has won five rings, level with Charles Haley for the most ever by any player in the NFL’s history, and owns a leading haul of four Super Bowl MVP awards. Indeed, Brady averages an MVP every two games in the Super Bowl.

The GOAT also retains top marks for the most completions of any player in the Super Bowl, both for all-time appearances (235) and in a single game (43, against Atlanta).

Brady has also thrown for 18 touchdowns in eight Super Bowls, against just five interceptions. However, four of the Patriots quarterback’s interceptions have come in victory, proving it is possible to turn the ball over in the biggest game of all and still emerge triumphant.
