Are Eagles Interested in Bringing C.J. Gardner-Johnson Back?
The Philadelphia Eagles announced two significant injuries on Wednesday, affecting their defense, but there has been considerable discussion this week about a potential reunion.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson Released by Texans After Three Games
The Eagles traded safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the offseason to the Houston Texans in exchange for guard Kenyon Green and a 2025 fifth-round pick, which turned out to be linebacker Smael Monden Jr. Gardner-Johnson was released on Monday after just three games with the team. Philadelphia drafted safety Andrew Mukuba in the second round and also has young safety Sydney Brown getting reps at the position, next to Reed Blankenship.
Gardener-Johnson, 27, has two separate stints with Philadelphia, winning a Super Bowl last year and helping the team win the NFC title during the 2022 season. He left the team after the 2022 season to sign with the Detroit Lions, but returned before the start of last season. During his two seasons in Philadelphia, Gardner-Johnson amassed 126 tackles, 12 interceptions, and a sack.
Could a Third Stint With the Eagles Happen?
On Wednesday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was asked about a potential reunion with Gardner-Johnson.
"I really am excited about the room that we have," Sirianni stated. I think they've done a really nice job to date. Got a good young player in Andrew Mukuba who continues to get better."
Fangio’s Call for More Consistency at Safety
"I thought he had nice plays," Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said after the Chiefs game. Then some other ones that we got to eliminate, too."
Fangio adding that Mukuba still has some plays he needs to eliminate might suggest they need more consistent play from the rookie, but Sirianii didn't sound like a guy ready to bail on his safety.
"Just really excited about that room," Sirianni explained. I'm really excited about that group and pleased with that group."
Sirianni also mentioned Brown, Blankenship, and Marcus Epps as options at safety, so it doesn't sound like a third stint in the future for Gardner-Johnson in Philadelphia.
