ESPN midseason awards: Phillies Ranger Suárez MLB’s Top Pitcher
Philadelphia Phillies left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez has gotten off to a good start to the season, with a 2024 All-Star Game nod seemingly within reach.
Handing out his midseason awards this week, ESPN’s Brad Doolittle has Suárez as his best first-half of the season pitcher.
At present, Suarez is on pace to go 21-2 with a 1.75 ERA, hard numbers to undercut no matter how you contextualize them with more telling metrics. While his presence as our so-far best pitcher is completely based on metrics, the fact that those align with traditional numbers all fans can get excited about is fun.
Suárez was his top first-half pitcher while teammate Zack Wheeler landed at No. 6 on his N.L. Cy Young list.

They weren't the only Phillies to be recognized, with First baseman Bryce Harper and third baseman Alec Bohm both making the NL MVP list for the first-half.
Doolittle has Harper sitting fifth in his National League MVP ranking and Bohm at No. 8 bhind Los Angeles Dodgers Shohei Ohtani (first) and Mookie Betts (second), Arizona Ketel Marte (third), and Atlanta's Marcel Ozuna (fifth).
The team also had two relief pitchers make the list of the Top 10 relief pitchers in baseball with Jeff Hoffman (seventh) and Matt Strahm (eighth) both being ranked.
