Flyers Prospect Report: Barkey, Bonk End Junior Careers with Memorial Cup
It’s been an incredible season for the London Knights and it was capped off with junior hockey’s crowning achievement.
The London Knights, led by captain and Flyers prospect Denver Barkey and fellow Flyers prospect Oliver Bonk, won the Memorial Cup on Sunday night with a 4-1 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Barkey scored two goals in the game, giving the Knights a 3-0 and 4-0 lead. Bonk was a plus-1 in the game.
Both Barkey and Bonk were playing in their final junior game before turning pro next season. Bonk was a first-round pick of the Flyers in 2023 and Barkey was selected in the third round the same season. Both figure to be key parts of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms roster next season.
Bonk scored 10 goals and 40 points in 67 games in his draft year in 2022-23. In the 2023-24 season, after being drafted by the Flyers, Bonk had a career year with 24 goals and 67 points in 60 games. This season was a bit of a down year for Bonk, who only played in 52 games and had 11 goals and 40 points.
Bonk had two goals and 12 assists for 14 points in 17 games in the OHL Playoffs this season. He had two assists in five games at the Memorial Cup.
Barkey had 22 goals and 59 points in 61 games in his draft year in 2022-23. In 2023-24, after being selected with the 95th overall pick, Barkey broke out in a huge way with 35 goals and 102 points in 64 games. This season, Barkey missed time at the start of the season due to illness, but still managed 25 goals and 82 points in 50 games.
Barkey had a big postseason as well with nine goals and 20 points in 10 games in the OHL Playoffs before missing time due to injury. In the Memorial Cup, he scored three goals and had seven points in five games.
