Flyers’ Rising Star Matvei Michkov Delivers Win With Clutch Plays
Philadelphia Flyers rookie sensation Matvei Michkov was a healthy scratch for the previous two games but made his return to the ice on Monday Night and showed what kind of impact he can have right away.
The 19-year old set up Travis Konecny for the teams second goal and then took a breakaway opportunity and went five-hole for the teams third goal of the game.
While San Jose fought their way back into the game, sending it to overtime, it was Michkov who shined once again.
After a scoreless overtime, Michkov got an opportunity in the shootout, making a move, slowly drawing Sharks goalie Vitek Vaneck from the crease and fitting the puck behind his pads for the goal.
Travis Konecny would put him the game-winning goal for a 4-3 victory, but the impact Michkov had was evident on this night.
"Every time I take the ice, I feel I need to put everything out for the team," Michkov said through a translator.
Michkov was back on the ice after being a healthy scratch for the previous two games, but head coach John Tortorella wasn't worried about a drop-off in his play.
"He played good, Flyers head coach John Tortorella. I wasn't worried how he was going to respond. He competes."
Michkov has five goals and seven assists in 14 games, ranking second on the team with 12 points.
