VOORHEES Andrew MacDonald's going down on the farm.

The 29 year old defenseman was placed on waivers by the Flyers Monday, with the purpose of sending him to the American Hockey League's Lehigh Valley Phantoms if he clears at noon Tuesday.

MacDonald was acquired via trade from the New York Islanders in March 2014 for a third-round pick in 2014 and second-round pick in 2015 and signed a six-year, $30 million contract extension the next month. The transaction puts the Flyers' roster at 23 players and has them under the salary cap by $670,000. Sending him to the minors only saves $950,000 against his $5 million salary-cap hit.

"I'm not gonna talk about the process," general manager Ron Hextall said. "It was a tough decision. He's an NHL player, but we were in a jam here with a roster spot and a cap issue and we've also got to put the best team on the ice Thursday."
