Former Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon as a Message for Philly media
On Thursday Eagles wide receiver Quez Watkins took a little shot at the Eagles fans, saying
On Friday, former Eagles defensive coordinator and new Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said, hold my beer.
Gannon discussed how difficult it was to be a coach in Philadelphia and didn't hold back...giving a passive aggressive answer about his time in Philadelphia.
"I'm very comfortable taking to media," Gannon explained.
"Philly is a very hard media market. We were 9-0 and I did my presser and they'd say coach, we want you fired. I said, we are the No. 1 defense in the league in every statistical category, why do you want me fired? You don't blitz enough. I said we lead the league in sacks by 30+ sacks. If you want to come call the defense, you can have at it."
I for one never really had an issue with Gannon. I think its more of a by-product of the style of today's game. Teams don't want to give up big plays over the top and like getting to the quarterback with the front four without compromising coverage on the back-end.
While Gannon wasn't perfect, the team was one of the top defenses in the league and multiple players in the scheme had their best years ever as a pro.
Haason Reddick, Javon Hargrave, Brandon Graham, James Bradberry, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, T.J. Edwards, Kyzir White and others, all had the best seasons of their careers playing for Gannon.
Hargrave, Gardner-Johnson, Edwards and White all parlayed their success into free agent deals with other teams.
While he holds some accountability for the teams play, especially in the Super Bowl, fans tend to blame the coach way to much and I think this is another example of that.
