Former Phillies Closer Carlos Estévez Signs with Royals
The Philadelphia Phillies will officially have a new closer in 2025.
Jeff Hoffman signed with Toronto and now Carlos Estévez has signed with a new team, the Kansas City Royals.
Estévez agreed to a two-year, $22.2 million deal with a club option to join KC’s bullpen according to multiple reports.
The Phillies will now move on with a bullpen that will feature a new closer in 2025 after the team acquired Estévez at the 2024 trade deadline from the Los Angeles Angels.
Estévez Philadelphia tenure had its ups and downs, but he was undoubtedly a critical piece of their bullpen after coming over in the trade. With Philadelphia, Estévez was 3-2 with a 2.57 ERA, notching six saves in 20 appearances.
The Phillies added Estévez at the 2024 trade deadline after using a committee approach for much of the season. Philadelphia added Estévez from LA for pitching prospects Samuel Aldegheri and George Klassen.
In the postseason, Estévez struggled, with a 3.38 ERA, in 2.2 innings of work, pitching in three games. He will be remembered for giving up a grand slam to Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor with a 1-0 lead.
The Phillies bullpen was a key component all season, but it let them down in the series against the Mets and now both Hoffman and Estévez have new teams.
He joins a Roylas club that won 86 games and finsihed second in the American League Central last season and reached the ALDS before losing to the New York Yankees.
