Galloway, NJ, Native Makes History for Rutgers Baseball Team
Galloway native Christian Coppola, who played his high school baseball at Cedar Creek high school in Egg Harbor City made history this season during his first collegiate season at Rutgers.
Coppola has been chosen for the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, but made history by becoming the first-ever Rutgers true freshman to be named All-Big Ten First Team.
He earns the honor after a year where ranked second among all Big Ten starters with a 3.60 ERA, while his 13 strikeouts against Penn State were the most by any Big Ten player in a conference game.
He was also named the National Pitcher of the Week for his eight-inning, 12-strikeout performance against Michigan back on
Overall on the season, the rookie went 5-5 with a 3.60 ERA, striking out 68 batters in 60 innings, making 12 starts for the Scarlet Knights.
While at Cedar Creek, the 6-foot-5 right-hander, earned NJ.com All-Group II Second Team with a 2.82 ERA in 28.2 innings with 38 strikeouts in 2021 for the Pirates.
Joining Coppola on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team is Brigantine native and Holy Spirit alum, Trevor Cohen.
Cohen started all 54 games for Rutgers in the outfield and collected a .288 batting average. He was the second-toughest player to strike out in the Big Ten, striking out just once every 9.6 plate appearances. His 61 hits tied for third on the team and his 33 RBIs tied for fifth. He walked 25 times to just 22 strikeouts, which were the fewest among all qualified RU hitters.
Cohen hit .288 with one home run, 33 RBI, and 10 stolen bases as a rookie for the Scarlet Knights.
