The Battle at the Beach will be back on the boardwalk in Ocean City in 2022.

Some of the matchups have been released and another big one was just announced on Monday, with the Holy Spirit Spartans facing Cherokee on Sunday, Aug 28 at 2 p.m.

Both the Spartans and Chiefs are perennial South Jersey powers, with Cherokee finishing the 2021 season 7-3, No. 10 in the final Online Top 25 rankings.  Holy Spirit ended their season 5-6 and No. 12 in the final rankings.

The Spartans will be reloading somewhat in 2022, with quarterback Trevor Cohen and wide receiver Elijah Steward both graduating.  Sean Burns is expected to take over as the signal-caller for the Absecon school and Gavin Roman and Jayden Llanos are the top returning targets.

On defense Robert McDeVitt is back, after leading the team with 9.5 sacks as a junior.

For Cherokee, quarterback Ryan Bender returns, along with talented Brandon Boria, who ran for 1,620 yards and 20 scores in 2021. Bender was second on the team in rushing yards with 630 and eight touchdowns, and added seven passing scores for the Marlton school.

This was a great event that debuted in 2021 and kicked off the high school football season. Four teams, Salem, Red Bank Catholic, Cedar Creek and Millville, that opened their season on the boardwalk in Ocean City won regional championships at Rutgers this season.
