Starbucks has announced a major shake-up that could leave many New Jersey customers wondering if their favorite coffee spot is at risk.

The company revealed it will be cutting 900 non-store jobs and shutting down a number of underperforming locations across the U.S., according to liveonfox.com. This is a move that has both their employees and those loyal coffee drinkers on edge, especially here in New Jersey.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol explained in a letter released earlier this week that the decision comes after a nationwide review of its stores. Some locations, he noted, are not meeting financial expectations or aren’t delivering the kind of atmosphere customers expect from the brand.

“Each year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations,” Niccol wrote, according to livenowfox.com “This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult.”

What Does This Mean for New Jersey?

Here in the Garden State, Starbucks has become a daily ritual for thousands of commuters, students, and families. With stores lining highways, mall food courts, and bustling downtowns, the thought of closures raises the big question: Will your local Starbucks survive the cut?

So far, Starbucks has not released a list of which locations will be closing. That leaves New Jersey customers waiting anxiously to see whether their neighborhood coffeehouse might be on the chopping block.

With the company signaling that closures are tied to underperformance, it’s possible that some lesser-trafficked suburban or mall-based stores could be at risk.

While the closures are concerning, Starbucks confirmed that employees in roles being eliminated will receive severance packages. Still, for baristas and support staff who rely on steady work, the uncertainty surrounding which stores might shut down is unsettling.

What’s Next?

For now, New Jersey’s Starbucks fans will need to stay tuned. Will your go-to location stay brewing, or end up shuttered? As more details emerge, customers across the state will be watching closely to see if their favorite spot for lattes, cold brews, and cake pops makes the cut.
