Lucy The Elephant In Margate Gets Major ADA-Friendly Renovations

She's iconic. Standing at 65 feet tall, Lucy's team officially shared the news that she's undergoing a major renovation of visitor facilities.

Lucy's Updated Welcome Center Is On The Way

The current 1980s-era gift shop will be replaced with a state-of-the-art, ADA-compliant welcome center.

This place will be complete with spacious retail space, accessible restrooms, and both interactive and educational exhibits that will make the visit even more inclusive and fun for all who come to spend time with the most famous elephant at the shore.

Updates That Matter On Lucy The Elephant

Lucy receives over 150,000 visitors each year. The old gift shop was bursting at the seams on some days. It lacked basic ADA restrooms, so some visitors couldn't take advantage of them, should nature call.

This new center will be much more accomodating to school groups, families, and tourists alike. It will even offer a virtual tour of Lucy's interior for those who can't make it up the stairs.

Lucy's ADA Makeover: What To Expect

Don't worry, you can still shop everything Lucy if you plan on visiting in the near future. For now, the gift shop has temporarily moved across Atlantic Avenue to what was once home to Ocean City Home Bank.

The Welcome Center is slated for a 2026 opening.

This makeover isn't just about improving convenience, though. It's a major investment in making Lucy more accessible, educational, and welcoming for everyone.
