Winslow Twp., N.J. — A multi-year project to widen the last outdated two-lane section of the Atlantic City Expressway continues, and the public is invited to view an upcoming meeting on its impacts.

Since the road opened in the summer of 1964, Expressway motorists between Route 42 in Washington Township and Route 73 in Winslow Township have had to deal with two lanes in each direction. East of that point, the Expressway has been expanded to three lanes over the past several years.

That limited capacity has long been a source of backups and slowdowns, especially during busy summer travel weekends.

From 2022 to Now

Back in 2022, plans were announced to finally eliminate the last bottleneck so the road could more efficiently handle the approximate 47 million annual trips.

In 2024, preliminary engineering studies were conducted; last year, design plans were finalized and contracts were put out to bid.

When all is said and done in 2028, drivers will be able to enjoy three lanes in each direction along the entire 44-mile-long road.

Construction Should Begin This Fall

But to get to that point, the hard work is about to begin.

Construction is anticipated to begin this fall. According to the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the project will include improvements to two bridges over Route 42, two mainline bridges over the Great Egg Harbor River, widening of the Route 42 bridge over Sicklerville Road, and the widening of 12.6 miles of highway.

Public Meeting Scheduled

To bring the public up to speed on the project, the SJTA will be hosting a virtual public meeting to highlight the "operational and safety improvements for future travelers while aiming to minimize environmental, right-of-way, and structural impacts." The meeting will be available from Monday, May 11th, through Friday, May 22nd. Those wishing to participate can visit acewidening.com for more information.
