A citizens committee in Atlantic City, New Jersey has formally submitted a petition that contains 2,092 signatures.

This is substantially more than the 801 signatures that were required for the citizens effort to stop the furtherance of an offshore wind farm off of the coast of Atlantic City.

Signatures were obtained during end of 2024 and beginning of 2025.

The citizens want to overturn Ordinance # 74 of 2024.

Defend Our Beaches.org has released the following statement after the petition was turned into Atlantic City Hall:

“This achievement underscores the community's firm resolve to secure their right to vote on this significant ordinance, which could have lasting implications for the life, livelihoods, and health of the city's residents. Ordinance 74, introduced earlier this year, grants permissions and easements to Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Project 1, LLC for the development of an offshore wind energy project. The ordinance involves the installation of transmission facilities and related infrastructure through various public and city-owned properties, as well as Green Acres-protected land. While proponents argue for the environmental and economic benefits of clean energy, residents have raised concerns about potential impacts on the community.”

The citizens committee is comprised of:

  • Eileen Barker
  • Ronald Bailey
  • Patricia Deroo
  • Dora Grossman
  • Charles R. McDevitt

The citizen’s committee concluded that:

"The turnout for this petition is a clear indicator of how deeply the community cares about this issue," said Sherri Lilienfeld, the Community Awareness and Communications Leader for DefendOurBeachesNJ.org. "Despite many families being out of town over the holiday season, and battling the extreme cold temperatures, residents rallied to show that their voice matters in decisions affecting their future. The referendum petition now calls for Ordinance 74 to be suspended and subjected to further proceedings in accordance with N.J.S.A. 40:69A-185 et seq. The petitioners and community at large await the next steps from the City Council, urging that this process be carried out transparently and inclusively.”

We are visiting on-air with committee member Bob McDevitt this morning, Thursday, January 9, 2025 at 7:05 a.m. on WPG Talk Radio 95.5, 1450 AM and the WPG smartphone app.

Atlantic City is the home of great entertainment events and much more over the many decades. People do not want their community to be forever altered in such a radical way as this wind energy scheme.
