Eagles Look to Metchie and Cooper for Depth

The team did add wide receiver John Metchie III in a trade on Sunday, opening the door for a bigger role for him in the offense.

Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo was asked about Metchie's run blocking ability on Tuesday and said the best thing a wideout can do is give effort.

Patullo on Wide Receiver Blocking Effort

"The best thing that a guy can do is just give effort, and so he's going to be a maximum effort guy," Patullo explained. We know that coming in. Then, what we got to do as coaches put them in a spot to not be in a bad position.

As far as schematically with a certain body type, you want to always make sure you have certain guys in certain spots. That’s up to us as coaches. But it's got to be effort and if the guy's going to give a good effort, we can get what we want out of them."

With Wilson out, it could open the door for undrafted rookie free agent Darius Cooper, who has opened some eyes at camp and during his first preseason action, reeling in a team-leading six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.

Sirianni Praises Undrafted Rookie Darius Cooper

"It can't just be splash plays, it's got to be consistency," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said about Cooper.  But the splash plays are what initially catch your eye. You are always looking for guys that can contribute no matter how you acquire them. Again, you're looking for consistency, but you also have to have the talent to be able to shine to get in there. And he has done a nice job so far."

Sirianni mentioned Zach Pascal, Tyrell Williams, and Dontrelle Inman among undrafted guys he has coached before.

The Eagles play their final preseason game on Friday night against the Jets and need to cut down to their final 53-man roster by Tuesday at 4 p.m.
