New Indoor Sports Complex Being Built At Cape May, NJ Airport

For decades, High School and Youth Sporting events in South Jersey have to be scheduled based on gym availability and weather. But soon that dynamic will change thanks to the Delaware Bay and River Authority.

The DBRA has agreed to allow Aviation Sports Complex LLC to construct an 80,000 Square Foot Indoor Sports Complex at the Cape May Airport.  As part of the 20 year lease approved for Aviation Sports Complex, the domed facility will have Turf Fields to host Soccer and Lacrosse Events along with courts for Basketball, Pickleball, and Volleyball. Among the amenities planned for the new complex will be dining options along with areas for Jiu-Jitsu and Wellness Classes plus Golf Simulators.

In Cape May County, there are not many areas that can host Sporting Events and the only real multi-purpose facility for events is the Wildwoods Convention Center.  Local Facilities like Goshen Sports Complex can host Soccer games and events when the weather is accommodating, their indoor facilities are not made for Basketball Tournaments.  Ocean City High School has hosted the Tipoff Basketball Classic for years but that is scheduled around the availability of the gym with only one game to be played at a time.

This new facility being proposed by Aviation Sports Complex LLC would allow multiple games or events to happen simultaneously on site.  The opportunity for Soccer and Lacrosse to be played indoors along with a neutral site for High School Sports is something unique that Cape May County has not truly had in the past. The area's economy is built around the Summer Vacation Season but if frequent events will come to the area during the non-summer months, some seasonal local businesses could be incentivized to be open for more potential patronage.

As part of the Delaware River and Bay Authority's lease agreement, Aviation Sports Complex LLC will be paying $0.25 per Square Foot Annually for the next 20 years.  If you do the math, that totals $20,000 per year will be paid to the DRBA and a a total of $400,000 over the next two decades.  Construction will be begin this upcoming spring for the new Sports Complex.
