Philadelphia Phillies Add Three Veterans on Minor League Deals
The Philadelphia Phillies added a couple of veteran pitchers and a utility infielder on minor-league deals on Monday.
First, the Phillies added right-handed pitcher Guillo Zuñiga, who pitched with the Los Angeles Angels in 2024. The 26-year-old made 15 appearances for Los Angeles and pitched 17.2 innings with a 5.09 ERA and 12 strikeouts. He also appeared in two games for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023.
The team added another veteran bullpen arm, Austin Schulfer, who spent the 2024 season with the Tigers’ and Twins’ organizations. The 28-year-old had a 4.94 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 60 strikeouts in 54.2 innings pitched at the Triple-A level.
Both pitchers will add organizational depth and compete for roster spots at Spring Training in Clearwater for the 2025 season.
The team also added utility infielder Luis Verdugo on a minor league deal. The 24-year-old has played third, short, and second base during his minor league career in the Cubs organization, reaching as high as Double-A.
In 2024, Verdugo hit .257 with two home runs and 42 RBIs in 109 games for the Tennessee Smokies.
Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Feb 10 in Clearwater, FL with the Grapefruit League opener starting on Feb 22 in Lakeland against the Detroit Tigers.
The team opens the 2025 season on the road in Washington on March 27 against the Nationals. Their 2025 home opener will take place on March 31 against the Colorado Rockies at Citizens Bank Park.
