Philadelphia Phillies Weighing Major Trade To Upgrade Pitching Staff
The Philadelphia Phillies hot stove could be about to heat up.
One name we have heard a lot about since the end of the season has been Alec Bohm. Could the Phillies move Bohm to try to improve the team in another area, quite possibly to add more pitching?
According to USA Today MLB writer Bob Nightengale, the team has considered moving Bohm, along with top outfield prospect Justin Crawford in exchange for Chicago White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet.
They have spoken about Bohm and outfield prospect Justin Crawford in extensive trade talks with the Chicago White Sox for starter Garrett Crochet, but the White Sox are concerned with Bohm’s struggles the second half, posting a .681 OPS with just four home runs.
The big question there is, why would the team want to move one of their top offensive prospects, to land more pitching? Their pitching was a strength in the playoffs, while their offense was inconsistent for the third straight postseason. While landing a pitcher like Crochet would be nice, it would seem to be more of a luxury.
Crochet is very good, the 25-year-old left-hander went 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and had a 209/33 K/BB ratio across just 146 innings in 32 starts after missing most of the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Unless of course they could move Bohm and upgrade at his vacated third base position. According to Nightengale, if the team moves Bohm, they would turn their attention to Astros third baseman Alex Bregman or Milwaukee's Willy Adames.
If the Phillies trade Bohm, they are expected to make a strong play for Alex Bregman, whose talent and personality would fit in perfectly with the team, or perhaps sign Willy Adames and move him over to third base.
The biggest name here is Crawford, who is the team's top outfield prospect, hitting .313/.360/.444 with 9 home runs and 42 stolen bases across two levels in 2024, with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws and Reading Fightin Phils.
What do you think about these moves Phillies fans?
