Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber sets record, leaves game with injury
The Philadelphia Phillies removed designated hitter Kyle Schwarber from Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays with left elbow discomfort, the club announced.
Millville High alum Buddy Kennedy entered the game hitting for Schwarber in the bottom of the fourth inning and struck out.
Schwarber opened the game by hitting his 35th home run of the year in the first inning, breaking a Major League single-season record for most leadoff home runs with 14.
Schwarber later reached base on a walk and had an awkward dive back into first base, which could have caused the elbow discomfort.
On the season, Schwarber is hitting .251 with a .372 OBP with 35 home runs and 95 RBI on the year. Any extended time without Schwarber would be a major blow to the Phillies' already banged-up lineup. The team is already without Alec Bohm, JT Realmuto, Edmundo Sosa, and Austin Hays due to various injuries.
