Phillies Start Season with Win while Flyers Fire Head Coach
The Philadelphia Phillies opened up their 2025 season with a win over the Washington Nationals in Extra Innings. Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler looked good in his debut giving up one run and throwing six innings, striking out eight on Thursday.
Thanks in part to the shadows from a late afternoon game, Washington Nationals starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore was unhittable and struck out 13 Phillies. This Sunday marks the return of our “On the Mound” with former Phillies Pitcher Tommy Greene, brought to you by Blitz’s market of Ocean City. Every Sunday throughout the baseball season, Tommy Greene will analyze the Phillies play and preview Sunday’s games.
The Philadelphia Flyers fired Head coach John Tortorella after three seasons behind the bench on Thursday. Torts couldn’t survive the rebuild, and after a record of 97-107- 31 and missing the playoffs in his tenure, the Flyers decided it was time to make a change. GM Danny Briere told the media there were multiple reasons why the organization decided it was time to move on from the veteran Hockey Coach.
The Eagles made a change as well on Thursday, as they said goodbye to the Pep Band. After 28 years of playing “ Fly Eagles Fly”, the Birds have decided to end their relationship with the group who plays the Iconic song. We will talk about all the changes this week in The Locker Room with Billy Schweim.
On Saturday’s show, Producer Nick Earnshaw and Mike Carlin join me in the studio. We will take a look at the NCAA basketball tournament and see who’s headed to the Final Four. The Phillies continue their series in Washington, and we will hear from Mr. Negadelphia P.J. Corda brought to you by the Galloway Pool Service. I’m sure Mr. Negadelphia will have plenty to say about the Phils striking out 19 times in the season opener. Eagles talk and Flyers news will round out our conversation.
On Sunday’s show, my Locker Room youth movement will feature Producer Danny Ryan and "The Intern” Andrew Leeds joining me in the studio. Every Sunday during the Baseball season we go “On the Mound” with former Phillies Pitcher Tommy Greene brought to you by Blitz’s Market of Ocean City. Tommy gives us his insights on the Phillies and previews Sunday’s game. In Hour Two, we get our “High School Athletes in the Spotlight” with Fran Malaughlin brought to you by the Philly Pretzel Factory of EHT.
All that and more this weekend in The Locker Room with Billy Schweim, every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to Noon on 97.3 FM ESPN Radio South Jersey.
