According to Pierre LeBrun, the NHL will cancel the Winter Classic.

The event was scheduled to feature the Detroit Red Wings against the Toronto Maple Leafs at University of Michigan.

It was to be Canada's first appearance in the Winter Classic.

Hundreds of games have been canceled since the league locked out it's players, but this could be a foreshadowing of what's to come.

It's been an annual event played outside on Jan. 1 for the NHL that's garnered huge attendance and television ratings. Past sites have included: Fenway Park, Wrigley Field and Citizen's Bank Park.

"It's definitely very disappointing," Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard said in the report.

With an 82-game season no longer possible, a shortened version is still possible, however serious talks are not happening, nor have they been scheduled.
