VOORHEES— How much are goalies in Philadelphia under scrutiny? The latest hot topic is Ilya Bryzgalov’s sleeping habits.

According to a report on 97.5 FM The Fanatic, the Flyers’ flagship radio station, the goalie fell asleep in a team meeting and that’s why Steve Mason got the start Tuesday night against the Islanders.

“In the NHL, have you ever heard of anyone sleeping in a meeting?” Kimmo Timonen asked inquiring reporters. “Yeah, there’s a scoop.”

Fair point. Flyers meetings tend to be short anyway. It would be difficult to fall asleep in one of those.

“Not unless you're narcoleptic,” Mike Knuble said. “You've hardly even sat down. I don't think your ass made your spot on the bench warm enough. That's silly. That's asinine.”

Never mind the fact that eight Flyers took part in an optional skate the day after yet another missed opportunity to move up in the standings. Danny Briere was one of those players and is possible to return from a concussion Thursday night against Ottawa after missing nine games.

No, the talk was all about Bryzgalov’s might-have-been nap.
