MAYS LANDING — Technically, it was still summer on Wednesday afternoon. Maybe that explains the hot start by the Absegami girls volleyball team. Or, it could be the fact that the Braves have five talented and highly motivated seniors leading the way.

LINWOOD — Teams such as St. Augustine Prep, Atlantic City and Wildwood Catholic might have some competition this season from a surprising source. Mainland Regional has gotten off to a 3-0 start, and has a matchup nightmare in senior Osun Osunniyi, a 6-foot-9 center who can not only block shots and rebound, but also score.

OCEAN CITY — Ifreke Andy is a senior at Absegami, but he doesn't have a ton of football experience. He's a converted soccer player. Ocean City defenders are probably wishing he stuck to soccer. Andy ran roughshod on Friday night in Ocean City, to the tune of more than 250 yards and two touchdowns, to lead the Braves to a 27-14 victory over the Red Raiders. The win put Absegami at 3-2 overall, and

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — A 5-3 loss on Saturday to Middle Township might have been a good thing for the Egg Harbor Township field hockey team. It gave new head coach Kristi Troster a chance to explain to her team some of the things they needed to work on this week.

  MAYS LANDING — Bobbie Beck was staring down a potential loss on Monday afternoon at ACIT. The tying and winning runs were at second and third with one out, and the host RedHawks had their Nos. 4 and 5 hitters coming up. Absegami's defense put Beck, the Braves' senior lefty ace, in a precarious position with a pair of catcher's interference calls and an infield error that had already led to a run

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — The Absegami boys lacrosse team needs to be playing its best this week with games against Mainland Regional and Ocean City looming. The Braves worked out some of the weekend kinks in an 18-8 win over Cedar Creek on Monday, and while the score makes it look like a convincing win, the Braves know there is plenty to clean up before taking on Mainland on Wednesday.
