The Cape-Atlantic League, according to a press release sent Monday, is making some changes, most notably in its spring sports. The league is adding a tournament format for baseball, softball and lacrosse, similar to what it introduced last fall during the soccer season, and also announced that Egg Harbor Township Athletic Director Mike Pellegrino will take over as president starting July 1. Current president Steve Fortis, of Absegami, will remain on the leadership board as treasurer, and the league is keeping in place ACIT’s Dr. Robert Wagner as vice president and Cedar Creek’s Mike McGhee as secretary.

Boys and girls lacrosse will still have two conferences, the American and National, with six teams in each, but in 2020 there will be a CAL Tournament featuring the top two teams in each conference. The No. 1 team in the American will play the No. 2 National team, while the No. 1 National team will play No. 2 American, with the winners facing off for the league championship.

Had this tournament been in place this year, in boys lacrosse Ocean City would have played Absegami, while Mainland would have faced Holy Spirit, with the winners playing for the league championship. In 2020, the semifinals will be held on May 6 with the finals on May 8.

In baseball and softball, there will be a “Final Four” two-game tournament, with the semifinals on May 8, 2020, and the finals on May 11. The four teams involved will be the leaders in each of the three conferences (American, National, United) plus one at-large bid.
