The Philadelphia Phillies' struggling offense got a lift on Wednesday from one bat that has started to come around.

Alec Bohm went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in the Phillies’ 7-2 win over the Cubs, going 7-for-13 with six RBI in the three-game set against Chicago.

Bohm got off to a miserable start, hitting just .221 with no home runs and just eight RBI in the month of April, getting on base at just a .274 clip.

Alec Bohm’s Turnaround Sparks Phillies' Offense

If the Phillies are going to make a deep playoff run, they are going to need this version of Bohm, who drove in 97 runs each of the past two seasons. With the team struggling to find consistency in the middle of the lineup, the team turned back to Bohm, who was dropped to the bottom of the lineup after a slow start.

The Metrics Behind Bohm’s Bad Luck

That slow start might have been more of an unlucky start, with Bohm hitting the ball hard, but right at people. As MLB Analyst Ryan Spaeder pointed out in a X post from May 6, Bohm had 31 hard hit outs (exit velo of at least 95 mph), with an expected batting average of .355 on those hard hit balls.

He ended up hitting .000 on those hard-hit balls.

However, Bohm has found himself back in the middle of the lineup. With Bryce Harper on the injured list, coupled with the struggles of some other Phillies bats, he is hitting in the No. 3 spot in the order.

Bohm has responded in that important No. 3 spot, hitting .326 with one home run and nine RBI in 10 games.

What Happens When Harper Returns?

Where Bohm hits when Harper returns will be interesting. With the team moving Trea Turner to the leadoff spot, they could use Harper No. 2 and leave Bohm in the No. 2 spot with Kyle Schwarber hitting behind him, giving Bohm plenty of pitches to hit.

Bohm is an easy target; the former No. 3 overall pick has had his issues, and his poor body language and propensity to hit into double plays (11 this season) doesn't help.

However, Bohm, the starting third baseman for the NL in the 2024 All-Star game, is a very important piece to the Phillies' offense.  While he doesn't hit with the power you'd like to see from a corner infielder, he is a gap-to-gap hitter who is a proven run producer.

In 474 career games, Bohm has hit .307 with 17 home runs and 285 RBI with runners in scoring position, and for the 2025 Phillies to succeed, he will need to post similar, if not better, numbers.
