The Philadelphia Phillies made a play to hire former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who turned them down not once, but twice.

So they decided to run it back with Don Mattingly.

The team announced on Wednesday morning that Mattingly, 65, will get a 2-year deal to be the 57th manager in club history after going 79-55 this season, after taking over on an interim basis on April 28.

Rob Thomson, who led the team to four straight playoff appearances, was let go by the team after a 9-19 start to the season.

How Don Mattingly Earned the Permanent Job

While Mattingly steered the team back on track, they showed many of the same issues that have been an issue in October.

Familiar October Flaws Remain for Philadelphia

Lack of bullpen depth, offensive inconsistency, base-running miscues and lack of depth were just some of the problems this team has had since reaching the World Series in 2022.

Will having Mattingly here for a full Spring Training (if there is one) help with some of the little things that have plagued this team?  We shall see.

Mattingly was the 2020 National League Manager of the Year, and the Phillies are going to need him to be nearly flawless if they want to overcome some of their roster issues.

Both Mattingly and Phillies President of Baseball Operations, Dave Dombrowski, are scheduled to meet with the media on Thursday starting at 10:30 a.m.

Key Roster Decisions Facing Dombrowski and Mattingly

  • Trea Turner's future position
  • Alec Bohm's future
  • Interest in bringing back Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott, who are both arbitration-eligible
  • Would they consider trading Johan Duran, who is arbitration-eligible
  • Aidan Miller 2027 outlook
