Andrew Painter to Pitch Again Wednesday as Phillies Eye July Call-Up
The 22-year-old has opened eyes at two stops this season, starting four games at Clearwater and three games at Lehigh Valley. In seven total games this season, Painter is 1-2 with an outstanding 2.25 ERA, 1.114 WHIP, striking out 27 in 23.1 innings pitched.
When asked when Phillies fans could see Painter at the Major League level, Thomson said the team is sticking to their “July-ish” plan for his call-up to the majors.
Mick Abel will make another start on Friday
While Painter will throw on Wednesday, Mick Abel will make another start in Lehigh Valley on Friday. After his excellent big league debut against the Pirates, where he struck out nine over six scoreless innings, Abel tossed six innings, notching eight strikeouts, and just one run for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday.
The Phillies will need to find room for Abel at some point, or they could see what kind of value he has on the trade market with the team looking for upgrades to their bullpen.
