Avalon Zoning Board to Hear Tim Kerr Plan for Beach Restaurant
A plan by one-time Philadelphia Flyer Tim Kerr to substantially change one of the two businesses along Avalon's Boardwalk will be heard this evening during a meeting of the planning and zoning board.
Developer Tim Kerr has an application before the board for a 310-seat restaurant and bar, at 29th Street and the beach, that houses a pizza parlor, indoor arcade and ice cream shop.
The proposal, in an area zoned as public conservation, would require numerous variances. The Planning and Zoning Board will consider the application tonight.
A revised application for 2800 Boardwalk from TK Holdings, wholly owned by former Philadelphia Flyers star Tim Kerr, calls for a new restaurant with seating on an upstairs deck where there is now a pizza place, an arcade and ice cream shop. A liquor license would be needed to operate the bar for banquet events.
Tim Kerr has a huge presence in the Avalon and Stone Harbor area. The three-time All-Star played in Philadelphia for 11 seasons from 1980 to 1991 and holds Philadelphia's team record for the most 50-goal seasons with four.
These days, he owns Tim Kerr Sotheby’s International Realty, which sells and rents homes in the Avalon and Stone Harbor area. For several years, Kerr also has run a charity run that bears his name.
The decision to carry further discussion into tonight's meeting followed a Dec. 1 meeting of the planning and zoning board, at which some residents who have homes in the proposed structure’s vicinity voiced opposition to the plan and questioned its many variance requests.
The meeting is scheduled to occur at 6 p.m., at Borough Hall. You can also participate without attending the meeting in person through a telephone conference facility by dialing 1-877-510-2588 and entering passcode 139-589. The connection is audio-only.
