Davenport: Signing Jeffery Something Eagles Felt They Had To Do
On Saturday the Eagles and Alshon Jeffery agreed to a Four Year, 52 Million Dollar contract extension with 27 Million Guaranteed. The 27 year old Wide Receiver is tied for Sixth in the NFL with Seven Receiving Touchdowns but is also 24th in Receiving Yards (680) and 44th in Receptions (47). Yet he leads the team is Receiving Targets (95) as part of a Receiving Corps that is drastically upgraded over last year's group.
Turron Davenport of USA Today Eagles Wire joined Mike Gill on Wednesday discussing why Eagles gave Jeffery a contract extension:
“Signing Jeffery (to contract extension) was really something that (Eagles) felt they had to do and I think it was a reward for how he took the ‘Team First’ approach. He didn’t complain when he wasn’t a focal point of the offense when everything was flowing through Zach Ertz. A lot of times when you see a particular player excel there’s other reasons, a lot of coverage was being rolled to Jeffery and he started to excel in the Red Zone….That’s something for Carson Wentz, it’s all about developing that Quarterback and signing Alshon is part of that, he’s a big target, he’s a reliable option.”
