Eagles Sign Carson Wentz to Extension Through 2024

PHILADELPHIA (973espn.com) — The Eagles and Carson Wentz have agreed to terms on a monster four-year contract extension that will keep the franchise quarterback in Philadelphia through the 2024 season.

Per ESPN, Wentz is getting $128 million on the extension with $107 million in guarantees, a new NFL high-water mark. With the two years remaining on his current deal, Wentz is getting a total of $154M over the length of his contract with an AAV of $32M in new money per season. However, over the full six years the AAV is under $26M, a downright bargain for the Eagles.

“The blueprint is always, ‘Can you find a franchise quarterback?’" Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said at the NFL league meetings back in March. "Is he going to be the personality and the leader and the talent that you want? We’re very, very lucky to have somebody like Carson. We’ve planned for this and that’s exactly where we are moving forward.

“When you draw it up, I think it’s exactly what you want: A highly competitive, very Type-A personality, demanding, very smart, obsessed with winning and winning big, respected by everybody. Just you can’t really draw it up much better, and we’re lucky to have him.”

The No. 2 overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz, 26, seized the starting job as a rookie after Sam Bradford was traded to Minnesota late in training camp and was a legitimate MVP candidate by his second season before going down with a torn ACL and LCL against the Los Angeles Rams in December.

With Wentz doing most of the heavy lifting Philadelphia was 11-2 had the inside track on home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and Nick Foles was able to play Mariano Rivers, closing things out as the Eagles won Super Bowl LII over New England, the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.

Wentz's 2018 season was also cut short by a stress fracture in his back but when healthy the North Dakota State product has consistently looked like a top-tier signal caller early in his career.

Wentz has completed 923-of-1,448 passes to date (63.7 percent) for 10,152 yards, 70 touchdowns, 28 interceptions and a 92.5 passer rating in 40 career games. Since his breakout season in 2017, Wentz ranks third in the NFL in passing touchdowns per game (2.3), trailing only Patrick Mahomes (3.1) and Andrew Luck (2.4), and fifth in passer rating (102.0), behind Mahomes (111.7), Drew Brees (109.5), Deshaun Watson (103.1) and Russell Wilson (102.1).

Last season, Wentz ranked third in the NFL with a franchise-record 69.6 percent completion percentage and finished seventh in the NFL with a career-high 102.2 passer rating.

“Can’t even explain to you how excited I am right now to be a part of his great city for this many more years,” Wentz said via Twitter. "It means the world to me. From the moment I got drafted here, I knew this place was special, I knew they had the most passionate fans in the world, in all of sports, and I knew we had the opportunity to build something truly special here, and to be cemented here for this much longer means the world to me.

"... It’s going to be a fun ride. By no means is the work done. We’re just getting started. This year’s going to be special, and I look forward to seeing you guys on Sundays at the Linc in the fall.”
