Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. will become the Red Sox first base coach. Amaro Jr. was a part of the Phillies' front office since his playing career ended in 1998.

It seems like an odd move for Amaro, having served as the general manager of the Phillies since 2008, but he has indicated that he would like to become a manager in the future, and this would be a step in trying to achieve that goal.

Amaro was informed that he would not be retained by the Phillies on Sept 10, the Phillies hired Matt Klentak yesterday to fill the GM role.  Major League baseball organizational meetings begin on Monday night.
