Harrison Bader Departs Phillies for Multi-Year Giants Deal
If you had any hope that the Philadelphia Phillies would have a reunion with center fielder Harrison Bader, that hope has ended.
Bader has signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco Giants, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Per Jon Heyman of the MLB Network, the deal is a two-year deal that is worth $20.5 million.
A Short But Sweet Stint in Philadelphia
Bader is coming off a solid season, hitting .277/.347/.449 with 17 homers in 501 plate appearances for the Twins and Phillies, but excelled in his time in Philadelphia, hitting .305 with five homers and 16 RBI in 50 games.
Bader came over to the Phillies in a trade deadline deal with Minnesota, giving the team a spark in center field. However, he injured his groin in Game 1 of the series against the Dodgers, which kept him out for the rest of the series, save for a few at-bats off the bench.
Next Man Up: The Phillies' New Outfield Vision
With Bader out of the mix, the Philies seem committed to using Justin Crawford in center, free agent pick-up Adolis García in right, and a platoon of Brandon Marsh and Otto Kemp in left.
Nick Castellanos is expected to be traded or released before the start of Spring Training. As for what the Phillies could get in return for Castellanos, I discussed that with ESPN's Paul "Hembo" Hembekides on The Sports Bash. "I dont even know if a team would be willing to forfeit a bag of sunflower seeds, regardless of the flavor for Nick Castellanos," Hembekides joked. Not only can't he hit, but he is arguably the worst right fielder in baseball, and he is kind of a headache in the clubhouse."
Phillies pitchers and catchers report on Wednesday, February 11, with full squad workouts starting on February 16.
