
Holy Spirit Capture Title, Mainland and Buena End Their Seasons
TheHoly Spirit Spartans may not have had a regular season to remember, but their postseason run is something they may never forget.
The Spartans improbable run in the playoffs continued with a Non-Public B championship, defeating Marist 7-1 on Wednesday. WIth the win, the Spartans won their first sectional title in baseball since 1984 - a span of 31 years.
Even with the win, Holy Spirit is just 13-16 on the season, after starting the year 1-7. However the team fought and fought and will now have a chance to add a state title to their resume on Saturday.
The Spartans haven't won a state title since 1982 when it captured the now defunct Parochial A championship, but can add that accomplishment to their improbable run when they face Newark Academy who knocked off beat Montclair Kimberley Academy 5-0 to win the North Jersey Non-Public B title Wednesday.
Mainland Season Ends with Loss to Northern Burlington
The Mainland Mustangs quest to win a second straight state Group III championship ended with a 6-4 loss to Northern Burlington in a semifinal game played at Rutgers University.
Mainland ends the season at 23-5, while the senior class goes out with a Cape-Atlantic League title, back-to-back South Jersey titles, a New Jersey state title, and the school record for wins.
Buena Falls Short in Group II
The Buena baseball team lost its state Group II semifinal game 3-0 to Governor Livingston of Union County on Wednesday to end the season at 23-7. The Chiefs won the South Jersey Group II title in three of the last four seasons. Last season, they won the first state championship in school history.
