Here's something that many of us in New Jersey already know but people from across the country are quickly finding out: one city here is one of the most romantic in the nation.

Perhaps you should play the 1977 disco hit "Love Is in the Air" by John Paul Young as you read this (you'd know it if you heard it).

Editors at honeymoonalways.com recently commissioned a survey of some 3,000 people to find America's top alternative romantic destinations -- "alternative" meaning lesser-known -- and one Garden State city landed in the top 15.

Even better, two other Jersey cities received honorable mentions, ranking in the top 175.

Maui, Napa Valley, New Orleans... America boasts an abundance of fabulous destinations for couples seeking romantic experiences. While these well-known destinations continue to dominate the market, the quest for truly unique and unforgettable experiences leads couples to explore lesser-known, yet equally enchanting, romantic getaways.

Overall, anytime a city in New Jersey ranks nearly as high as places in Florida and Hawaii on a national best-of list, we're doin' pretty well.

Top 5

Per honeymoonalways.com's survey, here are the top five most alternative romantic destinations:

  1. St. Augustine, FL
  2. Paia, HI
  3. Hilo, HI
  4. Asheville, NC
  5. Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA

Let's dive into New Jersey

VisitNJ.org says of that town,

A gathering of antique shops, eclectic galleries and comfortable coffee shops clustered on the banks of the scenic Delaware River makes Lambertville a haven for artists and craftsmen. And the town's architecture is as interesting as its residents.

A bit further up the list, Princeton placed at #105.

If you’re looking for a mix of history, fine and eclectic dining, ivy-covered walls and a vibrant arts scene, Princeton is your kind of place.

And as for the top city in New Jersey, Cape May ranked as the 14th most romantic city in the nation.

The town's pristine beaches, with their soft sands and gentle waves, provide the perfect backdrop for romantic walks along the shoreline and tranquil moments spent together. Couples can explore the historic district, filled with quaint bed and breakfasts, boutique shops, and cozy restaurants, where they can enjoy intimate candlelit dinners featuring fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients.

Of course, those who live here already know that. The beaches are spectacular in the summer, the city is absolutely charming around Christmas, and the shoulder seasons are the best-kept secrets.
