This One Hurts: Bo Bichette Reportedly Agrees to Deal With Mets
It seemed like everything was lining up for the Phillies to sign free agent infielder Bo Bichette. The Red Sox were not going to offer enough money, and probably spent the money they had on Ranger Suarez. The Blue Jays did not seem to be a fit after signing an infielder in Kazuma Okamoto. But then, the Mets lost out on Kyle Tucker.
Phillies fans online immediately expressed their great disappointment.
The Mets, who already lost Pete Alonso to the Baltimore Orioles, and Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, needed to make an impact signing for their fanbase. It let them to sign Bichette for a position they did not even have open.
The Mets infield previously had Mark Vientos and/or Brett Baty at third base, Francisco Lindor at shortstop, newly-acquired Marcus Semien at second base, and newly-acquired Jorge Polanco at first base.
But desperate times call for desperate measures for the Mets.
The Mets, who have just two outfielders total on their depth chart, will have to be creative to fill the outfield.
But they just signed the talent and will worry about that later.
As for the Phillies? I think that they have set an expectation with the fanbase that will be hard to satisfy without Bichette.
Could they pivot to Cody Bellinger, who reportedly is at a standstill with the Yankees? Some felt he would go to the Yankees or the Mets. Or is Bellinger still in play with the Mets?
Phillies fans may not accept a "run it back" lineup in 2026. And this season is supposed to be different for Philadelphia, who will host the MLB All-Star Game, while a work stoppage looms for 2027.
The Phillies will have to be creative.
