Mays Landing, NJ, Woman Stole Money, Lied About Child’s Cancer to Delay Justice

A Mays Landing woman faces several years in prison for not only stealing a large amount of money from a senior living community, but also stalling her trial by falsely claiming her child was receiving cancer treatment.

Alicia Campbell of Mays Landing Pleads Guilty

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says late last week, 37-year-old Alicia Campbell pleaded guilty to theft and obstruction of justice in connection with her former position as lifestyle director for Greenbriar Oceanaire Community & Golf Course in Waretown.

Investigation Reveals Years of Fraud

According to officials, an investigation revealed that Campbell, while working for Greenbriar Oceanaire, was responsible for providing entertainment, event planning, and purchasing items for the senior community.

From January 2019 through January 2022, "Campbell utilized funds belonging to the association and purchased items for her own personal use and benefit. Additionally, Campbell utilized Venmo, a digital wallet application, to send money to third parties from the association’s accounts - only to have those monies immediately sent back to her and deposited into her personal bank account."

On March 28th, 2023, Campbell was charged with theft, financial facilitation, forgery, falsifying records, and credit card fraud.

More Charges Filed After Discovery of Fake Cancer Care Letter

As legal proceedings progressed, in April 2024, Campbell claimed that her child was undergoing treatment for leukemia in Philadelphia. Several weeks later, she said those treatments were not successful and her child needed to go to Texas Children's Hospital for further care. Campbell submitted documentation to the Court, purportedly from the doctors treating her child, and adjournments of the pending case were granted.

In August 2024, Campbell once again requested an adjournment of her case, claiming that her child was still receiving care in Texas. However, a letter she submitted was found to be forged, and the hospital had never met Campbell, nor had it provided any care for her child.

As a result, she was charged with tampering with public records or information, impersonation, forgery, obstruction of justice, and making an unsworn false statement to authorities.

Sentencing and Restitution

When she is sentenced on September 5th, officials will be seeking a six-year prison term and restitution in the amount of about $147,000.
