The Philadelphia Flyers kicked off a wave of offseason trade activity with their deal with Toronto to acquire goalie Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit. That move helped improve the team in the present at a critical position.

Their most recent move on Thursday was more about the future.

The Flyers made a trade with the Florida Panthers, sending Garnet Hathaway and a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick.

The Flyers are also retaining half of Hathaway’s salary, a $1.2 million cap hit on the final year of his deal.

Hathaway, 34, struggled throughout the first half of last season, finishing the season with one goal and three points in 66 games in the regular season. He had a goal and two points in eight games in the playoffs.

Hathaway had 18 goals and 41 points over his three seasons with the Flyers, better known for his physicality and veteran leadership on a team at the dawn of a rebuild.

The Flyers still have four picks in the 2026 NHL Draft: the 21st overall pick in the first round, their second-round pick, the newly-acquired fifth-round pick, and a seventh-round pick. The draft begins on Friday night and continues on Saturday morning.
