The Flyers loss to the Islanders on Sunday was slightly sugarcoated by the score. A 5-3 final didn't tell the whole story.

On Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, there was no sugarcoating this result. The Flyers were bad and they paid the price for it.

The Penguins scored four goals in the first period on their way to a 7-1 win over the Flyers.

The Penguins first three goals were scored in short order to take full control of the game early.

At 5:57, a floating point shot by Justin Schultz went over the shoulder of Brian Elliott and in to put the Penguins on the board.

Just over two minutes later, Jared McCann scored after being left alone in front of the net and the Flyers lost a puck battle at the side of the net. Just 33 seconds later, Sidney Crosby set up Dominik Simon, who walked in and fired high past Elliott to make it 3-0.

Crosby got into the goal column as well at 14:02, as the Penguins were able to get the puck to him while wide open after Travis Sanheim fell during the Pittsburgh entry.

The Flyers were outshot, 16-6, in the opening 20 minutes.

The Flyers held a significant advantage in shots for most of the second period, but nothing notable of quality to try to trim the margin. Late in the period, Pittsburgh piled on to the 4-0 lead.

Jake Guentzel scored on a rebound at 16:40 to make it 5-0 and just 20 seconds later Zach Aston-Reese deflected a shot by Jack Johnson in to make it 6-0.

After two periods, Elliott was pulled from the game. He made 22 saves on 28 shots.

Just 1:57 into the third period, Oskar Lindblom broke up the shutout bid, beating Matt Murray for his sixth goal of the season.

That was as close as the game would get. For good measure, Dominik Kahun scored with 6.6 seconds left in the game to cap the scoring.  Carter Hart made eight saves in the third period. Murray finished the game with 29 saves on 30 shots.

Crosby, Simon and Kahun each had three-point games.

The Flyers return to the ice on Friday night as they face the New Jersey Devils. Game time is 7 p.m.
