Philadelphia Phillies Release Whit Merrifield prior to series vs Oakland
The Phillies have moved on from Whit Merrifield.
Prior to tonight’s game against the Oakland Athletics, the Phillies made the decision to move on from their biggest offseason addition, releasing Merrifield.
Merrifield hit just .199, with three home runs, 11 RBI, four doubles, one triple,15 walks and 21 runs scored across 174 plate appearances. He appeared in 53 games for the Phillies, making 20 starts in left field, 12 at second base and eight at third base.

To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Wilson, 29, has been on fire since being sent back to Triple-A on June 14, hitting .315 with 10 home runs in 93 plate appearance. He was just named International League Player of the Week on July 1 after slashing .417/.500/.917 with four homers and a 1.417 OPS across six games.
Like Merrifield, Wilson can play multiple positions for in the field.
The Merrifield signing just never worked. He signed in the offseason for one-year, $8 million after making the All-Star game last year with Toronto where he hit .272 with 11 homers, 67 RBI and 26 stolen bases for the Blue Jays.
