The Philadelphia Phillies' struggling bullpen has added veteran right pitcher José  Urquidy ahead of their series with the New York Mets.

Urquidy Brings Veteran Depth for the Final Stretch

Urquidy, 31, won’t be eligible to pitch in the postseason after getting picked up this late,  but the Phillies bullpen could use an extra arm for the final 10 games of the season.

Phillies manager Don Mattingly told reporters on Thursday that Urquidy will join the team in New York on Friday and will be available to pitch if needed.

Pitching Rotation Shaken by Jesús Luzardo Injury

The Phillies placed left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day injured list and now need someone to make a start at least two times between now and the final day of the season.

Kyle Backhus Recalled from Triple-A

The team recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Backhus from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace Luzardo on the roster on Tuesday.

This season, Urquidy has appeared in 11 games with a 5.28 ERA over 29 innings in six appearances for the White Sox and five with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Overall, in his seven big league seasons, he has appeared in 92 games, making 71 starts with a 4.08 ERA and a 1.178 WHIP.

Roster Mechanics: Caleb Kilian Moved to 60-Day IL

To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Phillies moved Caleb Kilian to the 60-day IL.

Kilian was acquired from the San Fransico Giants along with Luis Arraez on Aug. 3, but has been out since Aug. 9, suffering an oblique strain. Kilian came to the Phillies with a 4.26 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and a 53/20 K/BB ratio in 44 1/3 innings for the Giants, but will now miss the rest of the season.
