The Phillies have added another bullpen arm in a trade today with the Toronto Blue Jays adding right-hander Vinny Nittolli with plans on adding him to their big league roster when rosters expand on Thursday.

In exchange the Phillies sent minor league catcher Karl Ellison to Toronto.

The 31-year-old right-hander has a 3.30 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 59 strikeouts in 46.1 innings this season at the Triple-A level.  He has made only one career appearance at the MLB level back in 2021 with Seattle.

So how can the Phillies make a trade after the deadline? ESPN's Jeff Passan explains that players not on a big league roster can still be dealt after the Aug. 2 deadline.

As Passan notes, as long as Nittoli is added to the Phillies roster tomorrow, he wouldbe eligible to pitch in the postseason.

Nittoli has been in four different organizations, including the Yankees, Twins, D-Backs and Blue Jays.
