Phillies Announce New General Manager, Other Promotions
In a bit of an offseason surprise, the Phillies now have a new general manager. The role has been held by Sam Fuld since December of 2020. But Fuld is not departing the organization, while Preston Mattingly will be the new general manager as part of a number of moves announced by the Phillies on Friday.
Here's a rundown of the moves:
- Mattingly moves from director of player development and assistant general manager to general manager
- Luke Merton has been promoted to director of player development
- Edwar Gonzalez has been promoted to director of hitting development
As for Fuld? Fuld has begun an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, with plans to graduate in 2026. Upon graduation, Fuld will be named director of business operations.
Mattingly has been credited with turning around the Phillies farm system. After taking on the director of player development role in 2020, he added the title of assistant general manager to his role.
