Phillies Bring Back David Robertson for Third Stint to Bolster Bullpen
The Philadelphia Phillies in desperate need of bullpen help are bringing back veteran right-handed pitcher David Robertson, marking his third stint with the team.
Robertson, 40, will make $6.22 million for the remainder of the season according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
From Matt Gelb of the Athletic:
The actual cost to the Phillies will be approximately $12 million, including the 110 percent tax they must pay on every dollar for being over the fourth luxury-tax threshold.
Phillies Address Bullpen Needs with Robertson
The veteran could very well fit in at the back end of the Phillies struggling bullpen. Robertson has saved 177 career games with eight different big league teams.
He joins a bullpen that includes Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, Tanner Banks, Jordan Romano and a bunch of unproven arms.
Adding Robertson certainly gives the Phillies bullpen, that ranks 23rd in bullpen ERA, some much needed depth.
Last season in 68 games with the Texas Rangers, Robertson pitched in 72 innings racking up 99 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.00 and WHIP of 1.11.
Phillies History with Robertson
Robertson spent two stints with Philadelphia, the first one in 2019 when pitched in just seven games due to injury after inking a two-year, $23 million deal. He returned in 2022 in a trade with the Chicago Cubs for pitcher right-handed pitcher Ben Brown.
During his two seasons with Philadelphia, Robertson pitched in 29 games, notching six saves, a 3.30 ERA and a 1.533 WHIP.
