The Philadelphia Phillies added some veteran outfield depth to the organization on Tuesday, signing switch-hitting outfielder Dylan Carlson and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The 27-year-old opened this season with the Cubs, going 0-4 in three games this season after hitting .203 with six homers in 83 games for the Orioles last year.

Dylan Carlson’s Journey to the Phillies

Carlson, a former first-round pick, has spent time with the Cardinals, Rays, Orioles, and Cubs and has slashed .233/.312/.370 with 43 home runs and 195 RBI in 570 Major League games. He has played all three outfield positions, including 241 games in center, 239 in left, and 113 in right field.

Switch-Hitting Versatility and Platoon Splits

The switch-hitter has been much better against left-handed pitching in his career, hitting .272 with 12 home runs and 58 RBI.

How Carlson Fits the Phillies' Outfield Needs

With the Phillies lacking depth in the outfield, there is a good possibility that Carlson could get called up if he performs well down in Lehigh with the Iron Pigs. Currently, the team is using 25-year-old Felix Reyes as a platoon player in the outfield after Otto Kemp struggled in that role to start the season. However, Reyes is struggling to find consistent playing time and could give way to Carlson, who could be more capable in a part-time role.

We will see if Carlson can get off to a good start at Triple-A and give the Phillies a reason to bring him up to Philadelphia.
