Would the Phillies part with their top pitching prospect to fix their biggest weakness?

The Philadelphia Phillies have a ton of decisions to make to try and improve the ballclub to make a deep playoff run this season.

They need help in the bullpen and in the outfield.

One area of strength is their starting pitching, so could they use that starting pitching depth to try to improve other areas of the team?

It's certainly an option.

The team has two young starters in their system, Mick Abel and Andrew Painter, both former first-round picks. Abel is currently pitching in the majors, coming off his second outstanding outing, holding the Blue Jays to one run over 5.1 innings on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Painter allowed four runs on six hits in four innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday, allowing two home runs while striking out five to lift his ERA to 3.86 on the season.

One option to help fix their center field issue, currently held down by Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas, could be Boston's Jarren Duran, whose name is starting to come up in trade talks with ESPN's Jeff Passan saying they "could entertain the idea of moving" Duran.

Bleacher Report gave 10 trade options for the Red Sox outfielder, with the Phillies package landing at No. 4 on the list.

Who is Jarren Duran?

Duran, 28, is under team control through the 2028 season, is hitting .274, with a .323 on-base percentage, four home runs, 35 RBI, and 13 stolen bases.

Duran was the 2024 All-Star game MVP, and during that All-Star season, he slashed .285/.342/.492 with 24 home runs, 75 RBIs, 111 runs scored, and a league-leading 48 doubles and 14 triples.

One other thing to keep in mind, current Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski drafted Duran in the seventh round of the 2018 draft.

The Trade Proposal: Phillies and Red Sox

So Phillies fans, would you be willing to move Painter and Tait, 18, the organization's top catching prospect, is hitting .285 with eight home runs, 35 RBI, and a .340 on-base percentage at Low-A Clearwater.

Left-Handed Lineup Concerns

Duran has played both left and center field, so he could fill either spot for the team if they eventually wanted to call up prospect Justin Crawford to the majors. Currently, Duran is playing left field for the Red Sox, but has plenty of experience in center, playing there in 2024.

Though center field is not Duran's primary position this season, he spent ample time out there in 2024 and walked away with 17 Defensive Runs Saved. Clearly, he can handle it if need be.

One issue with Duran, who hits leadoff for Boston, would be that his left-handed bat would add another lefty bat to an already left-handed-heavy lineup.  Crawford is also left-handed.
