Finally an update on delayed New Jersey beach project for Sea Isle City
The primary economy of New Jersey Shore Towns and surrounding communities is seasonal tourism, with the largest portion of those visitors coming between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend.
Coastal Communities from Asbury Park to Cape May see tens of thousands of people come to the Jersey Shore to spend time on the beaches each year. As part of maintaining the biggest attraction for vacationers, New Jersey Shore Towns have depended on beach replenishment each offseason.
But the 2025 Federal Funding Freeze put the work by the United States Army Corps of Engineers on ice. New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew rallied support to secure $99 million of emergency funding for beach replenishment while legislation has not come up for vote yet to create a permanent funding system for coastal protection.
The Coastal Trust Fund Act (H.R.7459) still waits to come up for vote, South Jersey Coastal Communities are getting the beach replenishment they need, but some not in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
South Jersey Mayor Gives Update On Beach Replenishment Timetable
In a press release from Sea Isle City Tourism and Public Relations, Mayor Lenny Desiderio detailed that the beaches will see new sand, but the project will not start until after Memorial Day Weekend:
"We can expect to see survey work on our beaches (the week of May 11th to 15th), with mobilization of some equipment prior to Memorial Day weekend. Beach replenishment will be placed between 29th and 55th Streets.
The replenishment work is scheduled to start around the first of June and is expected to be completed by the end of June. Work of this nature is very dependent on sea conditions, so we need to be aware of that when it comes to the schedule.
During the project, no more than a thousand feet of beach will be closed at any point in time, and the area of closure will move as the project progresses."
Mayor Desiderio noted in his "MAYOR’S MESSAGE" Press Release that this is not the first time Sea Isle City has dealt with beach replenishment during the summer season months. So City Officials, local businesses, and residents will be prepared to deal with the "inconvenience" of the work being done by the Army Corps of Engineers, who are overseeing the project handled by the contractor, Norfolk Dredging.
