Congrats to this week's South Jersey athlete of the week!

Justin Geri, Buena Regional baseball: Geri gave Buena the lead in the top of the seventh inning of its state Group II semifinal game against Raritan on Tuesday. The senior stroked a single to break up a 4-4 tie and help his own cause. Geri pitched a complete game, striking out six, in the Braves’ 6-4 victory.

Here are the rest of nominees for South Jersey Athlete of the Week.

Dalton Bew, Mainland Regional: The Somers Point native and Mainland senior was drafted by the Wichita Falls Wildcats in the North American Hockey League last weekend. Bew, a forward who played with the Boston Bulldogs of the AJHL, will look to earn an ice hockey scholarship to a premier university by playing in the highly-respected NAHL for a year.

Helena Leyrer, Buena Regional track: The senior runner earned a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles competition at Thursday’s state Meet of Champions, held in Old Bridge Township. Leyrer won with a time of 1:00.26, establishing a new record for CAL competitors in the process.

Rosie LaGrotta, Sacred Heart softball: The Lions’ ace pitcher dominated in Tuesday’s 4-0 victory over Gill St. Bernard’s in the South Jersey Non-Public B Championship. LaGrotta picked up her 20th victory of the season, pitching a no-hitter. She faced the minimum of 21 batters in the game.
